06/16/2010 Press Release: Capture Energy Solutions hosts U.S. Army/Industry/Government Leaders for Landfill Gas Discussion.
On Friday, May 28th, 2010, Capture Energy Solutions along with our partners from Energy Systems Group (ESG) and W. W. Williams hosted representatives from the U. S. Army’s office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management, Public/Private Initiatives and the Energy Manager for Installation Management Command’s South East Region. The purpose of this meeting was to present an information briefing and tour of the Live Oak Landfill Gas reclamation effort outside of Atlanta Georgia.
The Live Oak Landfill is a large, closed landfill located in the southeastern Atlanta metro area and was closed in 2004. Due to air emission restrictions, power generation was not an option. There were no large industrial users close to the site to take in the large volumes of medium BTU gas. A landfill gas to pipeline quality project was the best solution. ESG provided well-field improvements, gas processing design, engineering, construction management, and operational staff.
The Live Oak plant is designed to process 7,000 standard cubic feet per minute of raw landfill gas. “The facility will significantly improve the local community air quality by reducing the carbon dioxide – greenhouse gas – emissions by the equivalent of removing more than 108,000 vehicles from the roads or planting more than 134,500 acres of forest.” (Source: LMOP). W.W. Williams provided an overview of their Eagle Engine which is capable of producing power economically using only the gases produced by bio mass gasification. Typically, in this process, natural gas is added to “syngas” to increase the BTU contact which increases cost. With the Eagle Engine power generation system, natural gas is not required, making bio mass gases commercially competitive.
After a discussion of the various technologies, the group took a tour of the Live Oak facility led by Luke Brockman of ESG. Mr. Brockman provided a narrated tour through the LFG collection and processing plant. This highly technical as well as “hi-tech” facility is staffed 24/7 by the skilled technicians of ESG.
The U. S. Army has over forty landfills worldwide. These represent an opportunity to increase the energy security of those bases by creating secure, economic and clean energy. Additionally, there is an income opportunity for the Government in terms of revenues from leasing property that has no other value. In times of austerity that the Department of Defense is facing, these private/public initiatives serve everyone’s’ best interest.
Dan Bicz, President of CES commented, “This effort will help the Army understand the opportunities presented by what is today treated as a liability. By taking advantage of resources already available, they will be able to turn trash to cash. It is only waste if you waste it!”
